4.6 - Certs

Justification for Quality

“Why is this paperwork necessary?”

This question would be easily answered if purchasing agents and production personnel took a few hours to actually visit their plating vendor. They would see how strict attention to their parts results in quality assurance, however, it also results in saved manpower - i.e time and energy.

Most machined parts today are processed under Military specifications or ISO standards. As a result, the same commitment to quality is expected from the metal finishing vendor. Thereby, a written “Cert” or certification ensures accountability in quality assurance procedures while putting at ease the minds of manufacturing personnel.

Job Controls are used to monitor the actual metal finishing process. Testing Controls assure that the desired metal finishing meets thickness requirements. Certs assure that quality is attained by documenting quantity, test procedures and compliance, and ensure that the latest revision of a specification are acceptable and require signatures from the appropriate quality control personnel and managers during processing. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for a customer to call and ask what a Cert charge is. The answer is simply the reflection of time, energy, and manpower needed to maintain a good quality control department. The final certification is the economic guarantee that all specifications have been performed to a high quality standard, and serves as documented reference to prove it.

Sincerely,
