4.3 - Simplified Interaction

Too often, precision machined parts are sent from a fabricating shop to an outside finishing vendor, with the notion that the purchase order and part schematic are the only components needed for applying a proper finish. This misconception continues to tarnish efficiency in a "communications age" where timely information is critical.

For example, we often receive threaded bars or machined parts to be plated according to cadmium standard QQ-P-416 Type II Class II. This spec calls for a minimum thickness of .0003-5 inches of cadmium plating with a dichromate sealer. In addition, the spec requires test measurements on a 1" x 4" flat steel coupon to verify the results.

However, a measurement problem arises because the surface of the bars are much different than that of the coupon, and the plating process will cause build up on the threaded surface two or three times greater space than that of the test coupon. Nevertheless, an experienced machine shop will allow for this dimensional build up, and consider these necessary variables when designing a particular part. In this case, a production manager or engineer should have:

Sent the threaded bars for cadmium plating only, specifying on the P.O. "NO Dichromate";

Have the bars brought back for in-house "clean up," bringing the threads within acceptable tolerances;

Sent the threaded bars back to the metal finisher for the final dichromate application and certification.

As you can see, communicating specifics to the metal finisher helps alleviate any misconceptions that may arise from multiple design variables.

Today, the fax machine is a prominent tool when receiving quotes, however, difficulties sometimes arise when a machine shop assumes that the information they fax over for a quote will transcend into the realm of the everyday factory worker. This is simply untrue. Therefore, the more detailed information that goes into the Purchase Order - accompanied by a copy of the schematic- the better equipped personnel will be to provide you with top quality service.
